All About Pink Pearl Apples
There are signs around us you can’t ignore when the seasons change and fall begins to creep into our everyday; temperatures begin to cool, root vegetables take a center stage in our cooking, and apples of all shapes and sizes come into play. You might have seen one particularly pink early bloomer this season, the Pink Pearl.
Our Pink Pearls come from Devoto Orchards, a longtime producer (they're also the folks behind behind Golden State Cider) and one of the few remaining heirloom apple orchards in Sebastopol. They’re doing everything possible to preserve rare varieties like the Pink Pearl apple.
And for good reason – this isn't your standard Red Delicious. You wouldn't know from its cream tan exterior, but the Pink Pearl is really a beautiful sight once sliced open. The color of its flesh can range from a blush pink to a vivid red, unlike any other apple you'll bite into this fall.
When to Use Them
If you’re expecting a sweet apple you might surprised by the Pink Pearl’s tart-sweet juices. Its bold flavor lends perfectly to baked goods (baking mellows the tartness) and sauces. The best part – it actually keeps its blush color throughout cooking. Hello, pink applesauce!
Try them with savory foods too. Add them to your next salad with crumbled blue cheese, serve it alongside fish or pork, or incorporate them into your Rosh Hashanah spread this weekend. Pink Pearl apples do have a short season though, so grab these gems up quickly before they’re gone!
