Egg prices have been on a wild ride this year.

After avian flu disrupted supply and pushed prices up earlier in the year, the market has now swung in the other direction. Larger producers restocked aggressively, supply came flooding back, and prices have dropped quickly.

That may sound like good news at checkout, but the story behind the price of a dozen eggs is more complicated.

KPIX / CBS Bay Area recently covered the volatility in the egg market and featured Alex Motal, Director of Procurement at Good Eggs, who shared perspective on what is happening behind the scenes.

For smaller farms, lower market prices can create a real squeeze. Feed, labor, insurance, energy, and other operating costs do not always fall just because commodity prices do. That puts pressure on producers who are trying to maintain high standards while competing in a fast-moving market.
