Our Sustainable Practices

Any commitment to sustainability needs to be a holistic and comprehensive one. While we often talk about the ways our groceries and produce support sustainable agriculture and biodiversity, we want to be sure you also know about how we think about the packaging we use to get your delivery to your door.

Boxes

Our delivery boxes are made with post-consumer recycled cardboard. The sturdy design and easy folding mechanics make it an easy box to save and reuse, or you can recycle them after use. We also collect used boxes from customers so you don’t have to clutter up your storage or recycle bin.

Interior box insert

These inserts are used to ensure that your groceries arrive in good condition. They are also made with post-consumer recycled cardboard and can be recycled.

Biobags

We use green biobags to pack fresh produce like leafy greens. These are made with compostable resin and can be composted in your green bin.

Paper Bags

We use small paper bags to pack fresh fruit, potatoes, and other delicate produce. These can also be recycled or composted at home.

Frozen Gel Packs

If you order perishable, refrigerated, or frozen grocery items, you’ll receive gel packs in your box. Our drivers will collect your used packs the next time they come to your house and we will sanitize and reuse them. If you like to keep them, the gel packs can be frozen and reused at home as much as you like, or, if you’d like to dispose of them, they contain a drain-safe liquid that can be poured into your sink or plants and the exterior bag can be recycled.

Dry Ice

Some frozen items are packed with dry ice. For your safety, do not handle the dry ice bag until the interior contents have dissipated.

Bubble Pouches

These are used to insulate the frozen items and dry ice and keep them from touching other items in the box. These plastic pouches are reusable but cannot be recycled.

Good Eggs Kitchen Containers

All of the containers from Good Eggs Kitchen be recycled or reused.

Solar Warehouse

At our West Oakland headquarters, we are proud to be powered entirely by solar energy as part of a network that is #2 in US corporate onsite solar according to Solar Energy Industries Association. Our refrigerators and freezers also use CO₂ a dramatically better refrigerant for the environment.

Refrigeration is energy-intensive and it’s important to us that we’re using renewables and the most environmentally friendly approach we can to receive and store every item we sell before it makes its way to you.

In the future

We are continuously doing research and experimentation to discover new ways to make our packaging more sustainable and less wasteful.
