How to Make a Perfect Turkey Burger
Turkey burgers are much leaner than hamburgers, so you’ll want to ensure your meat is both flavorful and moist! Our recipe adds a few condiments you already have on hand — ketchup, mustard and a bit of grated onion. The idea is to add ingredients that will give you a juicy satisfying burger…and not miss the richness of ground beef. I also encourage you to get creative - you can add fresh chopped herbs, taco seasoning or even a dollop of mayonnaise to the mix! You’ll never go back to traditional beef burgers again!
For this recipe we are serving these burgers on brioche hamburger buns with crisp butter lettuce, gooey jack cheese and a dollop of guacamole from the Good Eggs Kitchen. But the possibilities are endless, try adding thick cut slices of heirloom tomatoes, pickled onions or even a few slices of sauteed jalapenos. Bon appetit!
Ingredients
1 lb of ground turkey (see note below)
½ medium onion
1 tablespoon mustard
2 tablespoons ketchup
¾ teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste
Canola oil, or other neutral oil
4 Burger buns
4 Slices of Jack cheese, or your preferred cheese
For Serving
Guacamole
Butter lettuce leaves, washed and dried
Instructions
Grate the onion on the small holes of a box grater to make two tablespoons of grated onion. Place the grated onion (discard the onion juice), ground turkey, mustard, ketchup, salt and pepper into a mixing bowl. Using a fork, mix together well. Shape into four ½ inch-thick patties — and place in the freezer to firm for 5 minutes.
In a cast-iron skillet or frying pan over medium heat, warm 2 tablespoons of canola oil. When the oil shimmers, add the turkey patties and cook until browned on the first side, about 5 minutes. Flip and top each patty with cheese. Continue to cook until the patties are no longer pink at the center and the cheese is melted, about 4 minutes longer. Transfer the patties to a plate and keep warm.
Meanwhile, trim the little gem lettuce, and separate the leaves. Toast the burger buns. To build the burgers, place the buns on plates, and stack with the turkey patties. Top with the guacamole and lettuce leaves. Serve immediately.
Note: Your turkey may arrive frozen for freshness. Store it in the refrigerator to defrost before cooking. If you need to defrost it the same day, place the sealed package in a bowl of cold water, and leave the tap running in a thin stream for about 30 minutes.
